Weekly summary of aquaculture news from Vietnam (November 11, 2019 – November 17, 2019)

Aquaculture:

Bac Lieu Province is developing a super-intensive shrimp farming model in circular tanks. The model brings high efficiency, helps farmers manage water sources, copes with extreme weather, epidemics, and saves high input costs.

Nguyen Viet Khoi, living in Long Dien Commune, Dong Hai District, has 10 circular shrimp tanks. On average, each tank is from 250 to 500 square meters. The productivity of each tank is always 30-35% higher than that of traditional earthen ponds. The recent harvest had a yield of 7.6-7.8 tons/1,000 square meters, reaching from 26-27 shrimp/kilograms after 3 months of farming. The selling price also reached VND170,000/kilogram. Excluding investment costs, Nguyen earned a profit of about 50%.

This model does not use antibiotics and chemicals during the farming process. It has less negative impacts on the environment, and creates a safe pond condition for shrimp to develop. The model also limits diseases and has a short farming time of 2,5 to 3.5 months.

This technology of super-intensive shrimp farming in circular tanks utilizes automation and filtered water systems that do not discharge water to the outside environment to avoid pollution. The investment capital for each round tank of 250 square meters is about VND120 million.

Processing, Import and Export:

According to authority, the estimated seafood export in October 2019 was at $875.4 million, down by 0.5% compared to last year. The statistics brought the total export turnover by the end of October 2019 to $7.13 billion, down 1,5% over the same period in 2018.

Despite that, shrimp export tended to increase gradually. In October, shrimp export itself reached $346 million, bringing the total 10-month export of this product to $2.78 billion.

Pangasius (Tra fish, or swai) export continued to decrease by 11% in October and only reached $201.5 million. This made the total 10-month export turnover of this product at $1.66 billion.

Export of other seafood products in October still maintained a growth of over 7% to $328 million. With the current trend, seafood export in 2019 was forecasted to meet the target of $8.69 billion, down 1.2% compared to 2018.
