Weekly summary of agriculture news from Vietnam (November 25, 2019 – December 8, 2019)

Livestock:

The African swine fever virus causes not only great losses to pig farmers, but also made it difficult to many businesses, establishments producing and trading animal feed. Although businesses have switched to producing feed for poultry and waterfowl, due to the declining demand, their revenue drops sharply.

According to authorities of Hanoi City, there are currently 51 production facilities and 1,160 establishments trading animal feed.

The first impact on the animal feed businesses when the African swine fever virus occurs is a decrease in production and a low turnover. Many agents and shops are in a difficult situation to recover their capital and fall into debt.

Plantation:

Coffee prices in the Central Highlands region of Vietnam on November 21, 2019 increased simultaneously VND900,000/ton to VND33.2 - 33.6 million/ton.

Specifically, the price of coffee in Lam Dong Province was at VND33.2 million/ton; in Gia Lai and Dak Nong Provinces at VND33.5 million/ton, and in Dak Lak Province at VND33.6 million/ton.

Although this is not the desired price of coffee growers, the increase at this time of the main harvest season is a promising expectation of higher coffee prices in the near future. This helps farmers plan out their strategies for post-harvest production for this 2019 coffee crop.

Fruits:

In Binh Thuan Province, the current price of unseasonal dragon fruit is only at VND6,000 - 7,000/kilogram. The best type of dragon fruit is at VND8,000 - 9,000/kilogram, but the sales of this type is rare.

Some farmers in the province said that the price of dragon fruit has to be over VND10,000/kilogram in order of them to meet breakeven points. With the current price, most local dragon fruit growers are suffering from heavy losses.

The reason for the falling price of dragon fruit is due to the declining export to China. Currently, China reduces their export orders, making the price of dragon fruit drops quickly.

Binh Thuan Province is known as the "capital" of Vietnam's dragon fruit. The province has nearly 30,000 hectares of dragon fruit, with a total output of over 600,000 tons/year.

Farmers, Agriculture, Countryside:

Hanoi City has 3,066 farms, including 2,126 livestock farms; 484 aquaculture farms; 246 general farms; 209 cultivation farms, and 1 forestry farm.

These farms are effectively using resources, especially labor, land and capital investment. The efficiency of local farms has contributed significantly to the value of agricultural, forestry and fishery production in the city. Some special farms such as ecological farms especially promote tourism and create a green environment for city residents and visitors.

Pet, Flowers and Ornamental Plants:

The Ho Chi Minh City Ornamental Creature Week at Go Vap Flower Village Park was held from November 27, 2019 to December 1, 2019.

More than 100 booths participated in the exhibition displaying products of different fields, such as ornamental flower (Mokara orchids, Dendrobium orchids, and ornamental plants of all kinds); bonsai miniatures; aquarium; traditional craft villages, and agricultural materials.

The exhibition week aimed to maintain and develop the traditional profession of cultivating ornamental pets and plants. It created a playground for artisans and gardeners to participate, display, buy and sell their products. Some artisans and gardeners could exchange their experiences and sign joint production contracts at the exhibition.
