Aquaculture:
The quality of shrimp breed and post larvae is particularly important to the success or failure of shrimp farming. In Dam Doi District, Ca Mau Province, new shrimp hatching models are established to manage shrimp post larvae quality after stocking in order to achieve high efficiency in farming.
The whole district of Dam Doi has more than 62,000 hectares of aquaculture. In particular, industrial shrimp farming is implemented in more than 2,300 hectares, including 953 hectares of intensive shrimp farming, with 1,171 households participating. The yield of shrimp production in this area reaches over 20 tons/hectare crop. The district also has more than 40,500 hectares of improved extensive shrimp farming.
Each year, farmers in the district need more than 4 billion shrimp post larvae. Currently, the whole district has 147 shrimp breeding and nursery farms. Of which, 108 farms are in operation. These facilities only meet the demand of about 1.3 billion seeds per year, or more than 30% of the needs. The remaining 70% of shrimp post larvae has to be imported from outside Dam Doi District and outside of Ca Mau Province.
Processing, Import and Export:
The European Parliament (EP) has officially voted to ratify the EU – Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) and the EU – Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA).
According to EVFTA, the import tax for most raw shrimp (fresh, frozen, chilled) imported into the EU will be reduced from the basic tax rate of 12-20% to 0% right after the agreement comes into effect. The import tax of processed shrimp will return to 0% after 7 years from the effective date of this agreement.
The EU has introduced a new regulation on tightening Ethoxyquin, an antioxidant that helps preserve seafood products. Accordingly, from March 31, 2020, Ethoxyquin will not be used in all types of aquatic feed. This new regulation will put additional pressure on labeling and traceability and may cause increases in feed prices and production costs.
Experts forecasted that shrimp export from Vietnam to the EU for the whole year of 2020 will be better than in 2019 because the shrimp industry can take advantage of tariff preferences from the EVFTA.
