Weekly summary of agriculture news from Vietnam (May 25, 2020 – May 31, 2020)

Livestock:

According to authority, from the beginning of 2020 until now, African swine fever virus has recurred in 155 communes of 20 provinces and cities. The localities have urgently controlled and prevented the outbreak.

The risk of disease recurrence and spread is severely affecting the organization and re-herd of the country’s sounder as well as ensuring the supply of pork.

Outbreaks are mainly recurrent, occurring in small households, which might not ensure farming conditions and fully apply biosafety measures to eliminate the disease.

Plantation:

Binh Phuoc Province has more than 15,000 hectares of cacao trees intercropped with other trees. The province strives for the end of 2020, the area of ​​cacao intercropped with cashew will reach 20,000 - 30,000 hectares, along with 60,000 hectares with sufficient water for intercropping cocoa with other trees.

Currently, with 1,000 cacao trees and the price of beans is VND60,000 - 65,000/kilogram, many households can earn a profit of VND150 - 200 million/year.

The model of growing cacao trees under cashew canopy opens up a new direction for farmers with old cashew-farming areas that are less productive. Intercropping with cacao trees helps farmers increase incomes, stabilize production, and facilitate an effective crop restructuring.

Fruits:

Soc Trang Province has awarded VietGAP certificate to purple star apple of Quyet Thang Agricultural Cooperative (Xuan Hoa Commune, Ke Sach District, Soc Trang Province).

Quyet Thang Agricultural Cooperative has a total of ​​29.6 hectares of purple start apple. The estimated annual output of the cooperative is 420 tons. In 2019, about 23 tons of star apple was exported to the U.S. The export price of star apple is higher than the domestic market price of VND18,000 - 20,000/kilogram, with the profit was VND90 million/hectare.

The cooperative also has a special area of star apple ​​intercropped with other fruit trees such as mango, jackfruit, and durian in order to maximize its profits on the same land unit.

Farmers, Agriculture, Countryside:

As planned for this summer-autumn crop, Dak Nong Province will plant 292,326 hectares of trees of all kinds. Among them, the area of ​​cereal crops is 39,079 hectares. The area of ​​perennial plants is stable at 223,321 hectares, including 130,346 hectares of coffee, 27,379 hectares of rubber, and 32,972 hectares of pepper.

In order to implement the province’s plan for summer-autumn crop production in 2020, restructuring of crops will prioritize adapt to weather conditions, prevent early drought, flood in the end of the season, and ensure safe farming.

Living and Environment:

The Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment recognizes that there are 3 Vietnamese Heritage trees in Khanh Hoa Province, including:

- A banyan tree with large leaves located at Cay Da Temple, Lo Gia Village, Suoi Tien Commune, Dien Khanh District. The tree is 250 years old and 26 meters high. Its trunk circumference is 9.8 meters.

- A 240-year-old wild almond tree, located at at Hon Danh, Suoi Lach Hamlet, Khanh Trung Commune, Khanh Vinh District. The tree is 27 meters high with the largest trunk circumference of 3.7 meters.

- A cluster of banyan tree with small fruits at Ngoc Van Vihara, Tan Phuoc Bac Hamlet, Van Phuoc Commune, Van Ninh District. The cluster is more than 250 years old, with a height of 25 meters. It includes 1 main trunk and 10 secondary stems, with a total circumference of 11 trunks of 56 meters.

Pet, Flowers and Ornamental Plants:

Not as common as orchids, mutant orchid is very rare. In Phu Yen Province, in 2019, Ngoc Dung Orchid Garden (in Tuy Hoa City) for the first time introduced a mutant wild Dendrobium anosmum pot purchased from a lumberjack in Son Hoa District.

The owner of Ngoc Dung Garden has organized a show to invite orchid lovers to enjoy and this orchid named "Fairy Phu Yen."

Mutant wild orchid with unique shape is very valuable. Its price ranges from a few dozen to a billion of Vietnamese dong. These rare flowers are becoming more popular for orchid lovers nowadays.
