Weekly summary of aquaculture news from Vietnam (May 25, 2020 – May 31, 2020)

Aquaculture:

For this year's first shrimp crop, the shrimp farming area in Binh Dinh Province reaches more than 1,959 hectares, accounting for 91% of the existing farming area. After 2.5 to 3 months of shrimp farming, many areas in the province have started to harvest their crops.

After the Covid-19 pandemic was controlled, businesses have returned to buy raw shrimp for processing and export. With the current selling price, shrimp farmers are able to ensure profit. Type 100 shrimp/kilogram is sold at VND88,000 - 90,000/kilogram; type 70 - 80 shrimp/kilogram is sold at VND100 - 110 thousand/kilogram.

In many areas in Phu My and Hoai Nhon Districts, shrimp farmers are also preparing to harvest. Although most farmers will ensure their profit, in certain areas, due to disease outbreaks, farmers must harvest early to avoid loss. In Tuy Phuoc District, the remaining of shrimp farmed in ponds is only about 30% as farmers have actively raised fish and crab to reduce losses.

Processing, Import and Export:

Vietnamese shrimp is expected to have more export opportunities in the post-COVID-19 period, when the world's main suppliers such as India, Ecuador, China, Thailand, or Indonesia are facing difficulties due to the impact of the pandemic.

The export turnover of Vietnamese shrimp in April 2020 continued to increase by 5.8% at $244.2 million. Accumulated 4 months of 2020, shrimp export reached $872.8 million, up 2.9% over the same period in 2019. Vietnam's shrimp export is expected to continue to increase in May 2020.

According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), in April 2020, Vietnam's shrimp export to most major markets increased. The price of raw materials and export are more positive than previous months. Inventory in large markets is not much; demand for shrimp in restaurants and hotels decreased, but the needs for shrimp increased in supermarkets and retail systems due to the trend of home delivery during the COVID-19 epidemic.
