Weekly summary of aquaculture news from Vietnam (May 3, 2021 – May 9, 2021)

Aquaculture:

According to authority of Ninh Thuan Province, by the end of April, the area of Babylonia areolata farming in the province is about 60 hectares. The harvest output is estimated at 290 tons. If compared with the same period last year, the farming area has increased by 19 hectares. The reason is due to the increasing demand for snail products in the domestic market.

A year ago, because of the impact of COVID-19, snail products were only sold domestically. The selling price was low, leading to a decrease in profit and in farming area. Yet, with the domestic market showing good signs of recovery for snail products, Babylonia areolate farming area in Ninh Thuan Province has been expanded.

Thanks to natural conditions, Babylonia areolata farming in sand ponds in Ninh Thuan Province is popular. Unlike black tiger prawn or whiteleg shrimp, Babylonia areolata is stocked in batches, not in a certain season. With a farming time of 7-8 months, although the capital investment is twice that of shrimp farming, if the price is high, Babylonia areolata farming will bring higher income to farmers, along with the lower risk of diseases.

Recently, in Son Hai 1 Village, there have been households that harvest nearly 10 tons of Babylonia areolate at a selling price of VND325,000/kilogram (type of 100 snails/kilogram). The profit earned is nearly VND1.8 billion.

As a seafood with high economic value, Babylonia areolata has a commercial price ranging from VND250,000 to 350,000/kilogram depending on size.

Processing, Import and Export:

Large investment, changes in process, quality control, and food safety are the measures that Van Don District, Quang Ninh Province has strengthened to ensure the quality of exported oyster products.

Currently, Van Don District is promoting the planning and rearrangement of farming areas to ensure density and quality of raw materials. At the same time, the district is paying attention to ensuring the quality of breed sources, as well as building safer and cleaner farming areas.

In terms of processing, the district is implementing a centralized processing zone for 39 oyster gut-processing establishments.

Processing of oyster gut in Van Don District began to prosper from 2015. At its peak, the output of oyster exploitation and processing can reach over 200 - 270 tons of oysters/day. Oyster gut for export brings high economic value, reaching VND95,000/kilogram. It can be seen that the improvement of processing quality for export is a direction to increase the value of Van Don’s oyster. Not only this direction helps farmers, but also aims to expand the export to difficult foreign markets in the future.
