Weekly summary of agriculture news from Vietnam (June 14, 2021 – June 20, 2021)

Livestock:

Listening to music, eating beer residue, bathing with mist daily, dozens of growing buffalo are the result of a strange buffalo-raising method by Hoang Ngoc Rang in Vinh An Village, Cam Hieu Commune, Cam Lo District, Quang Tri Province.

Until now, farmers in Quang Tri have mainly raised cow in the form of intensive farming and fattening, but almost no one has raised buffalo in this form. Hoang has boldly invested in barns and applied new technology to intensively raise buffalo.

Buffalo Hoang is farming are all male. For each crop, he raises from 20 to 30 buffaloes. Each buffalo raised in this form can be sold after about 3 months at a price of VND40-60 million, bringing an average profit of more than VND5 million each.

Plantation:

In order to improve crop efficiency, many farmers in Xuan Loc District, Dong Nai Province have switched to growing corn and selling plants to livestock farms and animal feed-processing businesses in the area.

According to farmers, corn grown for stem has a shorter growing time than those for kernel. Corn can be planted 3 crops/year or alternately 2 corn crops and 1 other short-term plant crop.

The average yield of corn is 60 tons/crop/hectare. The selling price is about VND900 thousand/ton, and the average income is VND160 million/year, which is 2-2.5 times higher than that of rice, about 1.5 times that of other crops.

Fruits:

In 2020, gardeners planted durian in Xuan Hoa Commune, Ke Sach District, Soc Trang Province. Nearly 50% of the area was damaged due to saltwater intrusion. In this 2021 crop, farmers have tried to improve their farming methods and be proactive with managing drought and salinity intrusion. Thus, durian farming has recovered with a high yield.

Compared to the same period in 2020, this year's durian crop has a relatively high yield and selling price. According to the record of this crop, the average yield reached 20 tons of fruit per hectare, an increase of 5 tons compared to the same period last year. The price purchased by traders was VND50-60 thousand/kilogram, about VND20-25 thousand higher than last year. After deducting the cost, there were still a few hundreds of millions Vietnamese dong of profit.

Xuan Hoa Commune has an area of nearly 400 hectares of durian cultivation. This year, thanks to early rain, durian farming was not affected by salinity, so the flowering and fruiting was good.

Farmers, Agriculture, Countryside:

In recent years, many farmers in Binh Duong Province have converted and applied automatic irrigation systems in agricultural production, which brings positive effects.

Farmers in the province apply the sprinkler irrigation model because it not only brings economic benefits, but also contributes to overcoming the current shortage of labor. Simultaneously, the model helps gradually put automation and mechanization into production.

From the efficiency of the automatic sprinkler irrigation system, many gardeners have earned a high and relatively stable profit from farming.

Living and Environment:

According to a recent environmental status report in Long An Province, the invasion of harmful alien species such as the giant sensitive tree Mimosa pigra and the suckermouth catfish Hypostomus plecostomus affects local ecosystems, and causes difficulties and challenges in biodiversity conservation in the area.

The giant sensitive tree Mimosa pigra, belonging to the Mimosaceae family, is native to Central and South America. It began to invade Vietnam in the 1980s. The tree thrives and forms a tall shrub that makes other species fail to develop.

In addition, according to the assessment of specialized agencies, Long An Province in particular and the Mekong River Delta in general are also currently being invaded by the suckermouth catfish. This fish is native to South America and can live in many different ecological conditions. The fish lives in the wild but is now at different places because some people raise it as pets in fish tanks to eat algae, moss, and clean the tank walls. However, someone released it into wild ponds and lakes, causing invasion to local ecosystems.
