Weekly summary of aquaculture news from Vietnam (June 14, 2021 – June 20, 2021)

Aquaculture:

Thanks to the application of Semi-Biofloc technology in white leg shrimp farming, many households in Binh Dinh Province have raised the shrimp winter crop with a success rate of over 90% and high economic efficiency. Many households also succeeded from the first time using Semi-Biofloc technology. This model opens a promising direction for the local shrimp farming industry.

In the cold and rainy season, the season when shrimp growth is at its lowest, farming time is usually long with risks for shrimp health. But with new technology, farmers were able to succeed. After 4 months of farming, the output can reach 50 shrimp/kilogram, which is high compared to conventional farming.

Also raising shrimp with Semi-Biofloc technology, during the last Lunar New Year, shrimp farmers in Phu Cat District harvested nearly 380 tons of shrimp from 19 ponds, including about 8 hectares in De Gi. Their average yield was about 47 tons/hectare.

Farmers have used Semi-Biofloc technology for the past few years with a higher level of success recently thanks to the master of technology. With Semi-Biofloc technology, shrimp reaches large sizes and is priced higher. After 120 - 130 days of farming, shrimp reaches 50 shrimp/kilogram. During the Lunar New Year, shrimp can be sold at a high price, up to VND200-255,000/kilogram.

Processing, Import and Export:

Despite being affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, with the initiative from the beginning of the year and efforts of authoritative sectors, associations, and business community, seafood export of provinces in the Mekong Delta grew impressively, especially shrimp export.

Ca Mau Province's authority said that by the end of May 2021, the province's shrimp export was estimated at more than $423 million, reaching 40% of the year’s plan, an increase of more than 16% over the same period last year.

In Bac Lieu Province, the total value of shrimp export in the first five months of the year was estimated at about $280 million, up more than 9% over the same period last year.

In other provinces in the Mekong Delta, shrimp export also grew positively compared to the same period last year. Along with exporting, many shrimp farming households continue to expand production and stabilize their lives. According to shrimp farmers, compared to previous months, shrimp prices have decreased, but this price still ensures profit.
