Weekly summary of agriculture news from Vietnam (September 13, 2021 – September 19, 2021)

Livestock:

Due to the implementation of social distancing during the pandemic, it is very difficult for bird's nest farmers to pass through the quarantine checkpoints to harvest or take care of the nests in a timely manner.

Like many other commodities, localities in the Mekong Delta setting up traffic restrictions to prevent the Covid-19 pandemic has made it difficult for the care, harvesting and trading of commercial bird's nest.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, up to now, the whole country has 42/63 provinces and cities that raise swiftlet for bird’s nest with more than 9,000 swiftlet houses. In the Mekong Delta, swiftlet farming has developed rapidly in the provinces of Tien Giang, Bac Lieu, An Giang, Kien Giang, and Ben Tre.

Plantation:

According to statistics from the authorities of Phu Yen Province, heavy rains in recent days have caused more than 3,000 hectares of summer-fall rice in the harvest period to be damaged and flooded.

The number of damaged rice areas are 900 hectares in Phu Hoa District, 800 hectares in Tay Hoa, 600 hectares in Dong Hoa Town, 300 hectares in Tuy Hoa City. Among the damaged rice areas, there are rice fields falling over 50% of the area, causing difficulties for farmers.

The authority advised people to quickly harvest rice areas that were fully ripe and flooded. For rice areas that have not been harvested in time due to the lack of machinery and labor, people need to raise the rice bundles to avoid germination and seed dropping.

Fruits:

According to data from the authority, the whole province of Dak Lak has over 12,000 hectares of durian; the harvested areas are about 5,300 hectares; the output is about 103,000 tons. These areas include many durian varieties of good quality, which are sold domestically and internationally.

For avocado trees, the total farming areas are about 9,000 hectares; the harvested areas are about 5,400 hectares, and the output is 82,000 tons. Dak Lak is famous for many different avocado varieties that are rated highly, delicious and diverse in fruit shape.

To support the effective consumption and processing of durian and avocado during the COVID-19 pandemic, Dak Lak Province has had many solutions, such as creating favorable conditions in transportation and distribution of goods from locals to other provinces.

Farmers, Agriculture, Countryside:

In 2021, Dak Nong Province will plant 6,273 hectares of vegetables, tubers and fruits with an estimated output of 89,744 tons. From now until the end of the year, the output of harvested agricultural products will be about 75,000 tons. In which, there are about 48,000 tons of vegetables, tubers and fruits; 9,000 tons of avocado; 18,000 tons of durian.

Currently, due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is difficult to purchase and transport goods. Therefore, post-harvest agricultural products are difficult to consume.

Dak Nong Province has issued a plan to support the consumption of agricultural products in this situation. Functional sectors encourage trade promotion and circulation of goods; help farmers find markets and output for their agricultural products.

Living and Environment:

After many days of anticipation, farmers in the upstream area of Hong Ngu District, Dong Thap Province, were excited when flood water overflowed the fields, irrigating alluvium for many dry areas after the rice crop.

Water overflowing the fields, besides bringing alluvium to rice land, also helps upstream farmers to earn more income from livelihoods. Although the water has returned, it is still low; the amount of fish and shrimp in the wild is not much. People in the upstream area are looking forward to seeing more water to start their crops.
