Weekly summary of aquaculture news from Vietnam (January 17, 2022 – January 23, 2022)

Aquaculture:

From the beginning of 2022 up to now, the whole province of Long An has raised 550 hectares of shrimp. Of which, 48 hectares are black tiger shrimp, and 502 hectares are whiteleg shrimp.

Experts recommend that farmers stock shrimp with an appropriate density to achieve large size, and apply good farming models to achieve high quality products.

This is the time when the weather changes erratically and the temperature difference between day and night is very large. These factors cause shrimps to experience sudden changes in the water environment, cause shock and increase the number of diseases on shrimp.

According to many farmers in Long An province, usually, in the last months of the year before Lunar New Year Holiday, shrimp prices often rise, so farmers are expecting a good harvest.

The price of whiteleg shrimp in the province is currently at VND165,000-175,000/kilogram for size 40 shrimp/kilogram; VND107,000-120,000/kilogram for size 100 shrimp/kilogram. With this price, farmers can earn a profit of VND30,000-90,000/kilogram, depending on shrimp size.

Processing, Import and Export:

In 2021, Ca Mau Province led Vietnam in seafood export turnover with over $1 billion, accounting for more than 11% of the country's seafood export. Following is Soc Trang Province with $986 million, accounting for nearly 11%. Ranked third with a turnover of $922 million, Ho Chi Minh City accounts for 10% of the country's seafood exports.

In addition to the above 3 provinces and cities, the top 5 localities in seafood export include Dong Thap and Khanh Hoa, accounting for 8.4% and 8.3% respectively of the country's seafood export value with $764 million and $753 million.

Most of the provinces and cities have the same trend of seafood export decline in the third quarter of last year due to the strong Covid outbreak. Yet, exports tend to recover strongly.

In December 2021, Ho Chi Minh City had the highest seafood sales of the year with $127 million, which was also the highest in the country. Ca Mau's seafood export also peaked in October 2021 with $127 million.
