Weekly summary of agriculture news from Vietnam (November 11, 2019 – November 17, 2019)

Livestock:

Farmer Ngo Viet Tien living in Thanh Luong Commune, Binh Long Town, Binh Phuoc Province started to farm chicken for meat about 10 years ago. From 1,000 chickens, his farm now has up to 60,000 chickens/crop with 3 crops each year. The profit of this chicken farm is up to billions of Vietnamese dong annually. In the second half of 2019, with a capital of more than VND5 billion, Ngo continues to build an egg incubation facility with an initial capacity of 60,000 eggs/cycle.

Raising chicken according to VietGAP standard for farming process and disease safety, with synchronous investment, good control of diseases, and stable selling prices, Ngo’s chicken farm always has high economic efficiency.

Recently, the National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam has granted a collective trademark protection certificate for Thanh Luong Chicken Farm. This is good news for Ngo Viet Tien in particular, and other chicken farmers in Thanh Luong Commune in general because the certificate affirms the brand of Thanh Luong chicken in the market.

Plantation:

ST25 rice, a rice variety from Vietnam, has surpassed its competitors to win the title of "the world's best rice" in the World's Best Rice contest organized by The Rice Trade. The contest is held during the 11th World Rice Conference in the Philippines from November 10 to November 13, 2019.

This is the result of many years of study by a group of researchers, including researcher Ho Quang Cua, Dr. Tran Tan Phuong and Nguyen Thi Thu Huong, M.S.

ST25 rice is a long-grain rice with white and beautiful surface. The rice is very popular and favored in the market. ST25 rice can adapt well to climate change and weather conditions for stable yield.

Immediately after the award, many international friends and traders have come to congratulate as well as learn about bringing the world's best rice to high-end market consumers.

Fruits:

In the middle of October 2019, Cho Moi District, An Giang Province held a ceremony to announce and certify 311 hectares of mango meeting VietGAP standards. The ceremony also granted 7 planting codes for the Cho Moi - An Giang GAP Fruit Cooperative. This increases the total number of mango area in Cho Moi District certified with GAP standard to 437 hectares, meeting the needs of the domestic and export market.

Cho Moi is the district with the largest area of ​​mango in An Giang Province. The district has nearly 6,000 hectares of mango. Of which, 3 communes of Gieng Island have ​​4,235 hectares with an output of nearly 48,500 tons/year.

In 2019, Cho Moi exported nearly 65 tons of mango to Australia and South Korea. Recently, the Cho Moi - An Giang GAP Fruit Cooperative has signed an agreement with fruit import and export companies to supply and consume more mango products. This opened up opportunities for mango growers according to VietGAP standard.

Farmers, Agriculture, Countryside:

The 4th Vietnam Rice Festival in 2019 will take place in Vinh Long Province from December 13 to December 19, 2019.

The festival aims to actively promote the development of high-quality rice production and improve the value chain in rice production gradually towards organic farming. The festival also emphasizes on sustainable development of rice products, rice as food security, and climate change adaptation in the Mekong Delta.

Besides, the Vietnam Rice Festival 2019 aims at solutions to promote the brand of Vietnamese rice, as well as the country’s capacity as rice supplier and exporter.

Living and Environment:

On November 11, 2019, the scientific journal of Nature Ecology & Evolution published an article reporting that researchers of the Global Wildlife Conservation (GWC) - a non-governmental organization in Texas, USA - discovered a silver-backed chevrotain in the coastal city of Nha Trang.

The silver-backed chevrotain, also known as the Vietnam mouse deer (scientific name: Tragulus versicolor), is a species in the family Tragulidae. They have a deer-like appearance but without tear glands. The whole body of this animal is covered with smooth, silky-brown hairs while its chest and lower abdomen have three white hair stripes parallel to the body. Males and females do not have horns.

The information was reported by many newspapers around the world, such as CNN, The Guardian, and The New York Times. This was the first time a silver-backed chevrotain was photographed in the wild in Vietnam after nearly 30 years. Animal conservationists especially pay attention to the news.

Pet, Flowers and Ornamental Plants:

The 15th Asia - Pacific Bonsai and Suiseki Festival was opened at Suoi Tien Cultural Tourism Zone in Ho Chi Minh City. The festival takes place from November 15 to November 17, 2019 with the theme "Bonsai Art - A place of friendship and harmony."

The festival brings together nearly 1,000 ornamental artworks from 40 provinces and cities. Bonsai are carefully selected to ensure the criteria of high quality and variety of species, especially for those that are higher than 1 meter. Besides, the festival presents more than 250 Suiseki artworks, notably include a collection of ornamental stones worth nearly VND10 billion.
