Weekly summary of aquaculture news from Vietnam (January 20, 2020 – January 26, 2020)

Aquaculture:

After 10 years of researching genetics and breeding selection under the supervision of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (Australia), the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam has officially allowed the Viet Uc Group to produce broodstock whiteleg shrimp for commercial purpose. This event marked a new breakthrough for the shrimp-farming industry in Vietnam.

The Genetics and Breeding Center of Viet Uc Group has selected and produced many generations of shrimp with high survival rate and growth rate. Each year, the center breeds and farms more than 65,000 pairs of high-quality broodstock shrimp according to the biosecurity process, which meets the strict requirements in seafood breeding and farming.

Over many generations of genetic selection and successful application of molecular biotechnology, especially the single-nucleotide polymorphic technology, the center has improved traits of growth, survival, resistance, adaptability, and reproductive capacity in shrimp.

This technology relies on the decoding of the entire shrimp's genes in addition to the application of electronic communication technology. An electronic chip can be inserted into each shrimp for origin traceability and support researchers to analyze, monitor, and produce healthy broodstock lines, which help reproduce high-quality postlarvae.

On these days of the Lunar New Year, grilled fish cake production facilities in Ly Son operate with their maximum capacity to supply the best products to consumers. Every day, hundreds of kilograms of freshly baked Ly Son grilled fish are brought to markets around the country.

Ly Son grilled fish is increasingly popular nowadays. It is an attractive dish for many Vietnamese during the Lunar New Year Holiday. Local production facilities also focus on hygiene and food safety to build the brand of high-quality Ly Son grilled fish cake. So far, Ly Son District and Quang Ngai Province has built and expanded the market for 2 local specialties: grilled fish cake and fish sauce.
