Weekly summary of aquaculture news from Vietnam (December 28, 2020 – January 3, 2021)

Aquaculture:

With many years of aquaculture farming, Thuan Yen Cooperative in An Thoi Dong Commune, Can Gio District, Ho Chi Minh City has applied modern technology to its whiteleg shrimp farming area. The model helps increase shrimp survival rate to over 80% and brings a higher yield than traditional farming by 30-40%.

The pond of this model is designed with a circular shape and lined with HDPE canvas. It is floating on the ground in an area of 500 square meters with a mesh cover around to reduce lighting as well as keep the water temperature from rising too high in hot days. Before being moved to the farming pond, shrimp will be nursed in the nursery pond for 1 month. The 100-square-meter nursery pond is also designed in a circular shape, floating on the ground and lined with HDPE canvas.

According to Thuan Yen cooperative, the application of this high-tech shrimp farming technique will shorten the farming time and carry less risk. Shrimp can be harvested after 3 months with a yield from 40 to 50 tons of shrimp/hectare/crop. In addition, this shrimp farming model also uses membrane houses to limit the adverse effects from external environment on the pond. Wastewater is treated in the pond. Other wastes are collected and recycled as fertilizer for crops to ensure environmental sanitation.

Processing, Import and Export:

The Directorate of Fisheries has completed building an electronic seafood traceability software.  The pilot program is being implemented for fishing vessels in localities such as Vung Tau, Khanh Hoa, Binh Dinh, and Phu Yen.

After the pilot, it is expected that in the period of 2021 - 2023, the software will be deployed nationwide. From 2023 onwards, the directorate will fully apply electronic traceability for aquatic products.

Electronic traceability of aquatic products is considered as the optimal solution for all parties involved in the chain of exploiting, purchasing, processing and consuming seafood products. It helps meet the requirements of the import market.

However, in order to successfully apply this solution, a number of issues need to be addressed, including that the software must ensure safety, fully meet the requirements of participants of the access chain, and especially easy to use for fishermen.
