Weekly summary of aquaculture news from Vietnam (May 11, 2020 – May 17, 2020)

Aquaculture:

With more than ten years of experience in shrimp farming, Nguyen Van Cuong in Hai Dong Commune, Hai Hau District, Nam Dinh Province successfully farm whiteleg shrimp in cement tanks - a new method of the shrimp industry.

Sharing about this model, Nguyen said that each of his shrimp ponds is about 25m2. He installs a roofing system for each pond to ensure the stability of environment temperature and crops. With a fairly dense density, about 400 shrimp/m2. After 40-60 days when the shrimp are larger, Nguyen reduces the density to only 200 shrimp/m2 to create more space for shrimp and increase their size quickly.

Applying this method, after 3 months of farming, each pond can have an output of 80-120 kilogram of shrimp. The farm's annual revenue reaches VND1.8 billion.

Shrimp farming in cement tank helps farmers easily control and handle shrimp diseases as they cannot spread as widely as traditional ponds. Households also do not need to have a large farming area and can apply super-intensive shrimp farming to increase their income.

Processing, Import and Export:

The Pangasius (Tra fish) farming industry of Vietnam faces many challenges when its yield increases rapidly since 2018, leading to an oversupply. The price of raw Tra fish sharply decreases from the end of March until now, making many farmers face long-lasting losses. Tra fish-processing businesses for export are also facing many difficulties due to the sharp decrease in prices and export amount as an impact of the COVID-19.

For many months, the price of raw Tra fish was only at VND18,000-19,000/kilogram, even only at VND17,000/kilogram in some places. With this price, farmers lose at least VND3,000-4,000/kilogram of commercial Tra fish.

Tra fish export turnover in the first 3 months of 2020 was only at $334 million, down 29.3% compared to the same period last year. If compared to the same period in 2019, export to the Chinese market decreases by 48%, to the EU decreases by 47.3%, and to the US decreases by 19.8%.
