Weekly summary of aquaculture news from Vietnam (June 22, 2020 – June 28, 2020)

Aquaculture:

In the first months of 2020, Binh Dai District, Ben Tre Province has raised more than 1,619 hectares of intensive and semi-intensive marine shrimp. The province farms over 1.1 million post larvae, of which mostly are whiteleg shrimp. The harvest output is estimated at 2,763 tons from more than 467 hectares harvested.

After drought and salinity intrusion decrease, the price of local raw shrimp is at a profitable level. The shrimp farming industry in the district is gradually stabilizing.

These days, shrimp farmers in the district have basically completed pond renovation, cleaned pond environment and started stocking according to the recommended seasonal schedule in 2020.

The whole district strives to stock 5,000 hectares of intensive and semi-intensive marine shrimp breeds in 2020. Currently, farmers are focusing on stocking simultaneously, and completing stocking by the end of July 2020.

Processing, Import and Export:

According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), Vietnam's shrimp export industry in the first 5 months of this year had a positive signal when its turnover reached $1.2 billion, a slight increase of 2.3% over the same period last year.

Whiteleg shrimp currently accounts for 69.5% of the total shrimp export value; black tiger prawn accounts for 19.2%, and the rest are marine shrimp.

Notably, shrimp export to the US and China recorded positive growth. It is expected that Vietnam's shrimp export to these markets will still grow well in the coming months.

In the first 5 months of 2020, Vietnam’s shrimp export to the US reached $224.5 million, up 20.4% over the same period in 2019. Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, Vietnam's shrimp export to the US grew steadily in the first 5 months of 2020.

After a fall in the first 3 months of the year, since April, shrimp export from Vietnam to China has recovered. In the first 5 months of this year, shrimp export to this country reached over $169 million.
