Weekly summary of aquaculture news from Vietnam (September 14, 2020 – September 20, 2020)

Aquaculture:

Quyet Thang Agricultural Cooperative (Long Huong Ward, Ba Ria City, Ba Ria - Vung Tau Province) is testing a model of intensive black tiger prawn farming in round tanks. Accordingly, in the past and as commonly known, black tiger prawn is cultured in earthen ponds with a density of 10-30 prawn/square meters. Raising with the traditional method is risky and not profitable. Therefore, the cooperative decided to test a model of high-tech, intensive farming in a net house using round tanks.

The cooperative is experimenting black tiger prawn farming in 2 ponds in a total area of 400 square meters. The density of each ponds is 100 prawn/square meters, which is many times higher than usual. The high density is possible because farming in round tanks has many advantages. Specifically, the parameters of water source are controlled by high technology. Farming in a net house also minimizes negative impact of the environment, so shrimp grows fast, healthy, and farmers have lower rates of loss.

The cooperative is doing research to apply recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) in black tiger prawn farming, as it has done successfully with whiteleg shrimp, thereby, continue to increase farming density and improve production efficiency.

Processing, Import and Export:

After more than 2 years with a collaboration effort between different ministries of Vietnam and agencies of Saudi Arabia, the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) now allows 12 Vietnamese businesses to re-export wild-caught seafood products to the Saudi market.

To achieve this result, Vietnamese businesses have actively collaborated with authorities to overcome shortcomings and complete assessment documents submitted to Saudi Arabia.

Previously, since January 2018, Saudi Arabia applied an order to suspend the import of seafood originating from Vietnam. This order was issued after an actual inspection team of SFDA visited Vietnam and concluded some local shrimp and pangasius production and processing establishments fail to meet this country’s requirements of food hygiene, food safety and disease safety.
