Weekly summary of agriculture news from Vietnam (September 20, 2021 – September 26, 2021)

Livestock:

According to the functional sector, since February 2019, African swine fever virus has occurred and continued to take place across the country until now. From October 2020 to now, the virus has spread in 51 provinces and cities of Vietnam.

From June 2021 up to now, avian influenza caused by A/H5N8 strain also first infected and spread to 10 provinces and cities in the country.

The damage caused by diseases in farming is significant. The total loss caused by livestock and poultry diseases is estimated at more than VND1,500 billion, not to mention the direct impact of them on food safety and export growth.

Plantation:

In 2021, Hoang Nguyen Organic Agriculture Cooperative (Dak Song District, Dak Nong Province) received organic certification according to America, Japan, Canada and EU standards for its 77.5 hectares of pepper.

According to the leader of Hoang Nguyen Cooperative, one of the criteria to be evaluated for organic agriculture is that the product does not have residues of harmful chemicals. For many years, the cooperative has carried out the process of keeping grass in the pepper garden and does not use herbicides.

As a result, the cooperative's pepper products are able to enter difficult markets. Not only that, products of the cooperative are often sold at a price twice as high as the market, bringing high economic efficiency to pepper growers.

Fruits:

Due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, although the consumption market decreases, thanks to clean production and linkage in consumption, people growing seedless lime in Phung Hiep District, Hau Giang Province still have a stable income.

Currently, the price of seedless lime in the market has decreased to VND3,000-4,000/kilogram, but the OCOP Fruits Cooperative in Chau Thanh District, Hau Giang Province still buys them at VND6,500-8,000/kilogram. With this price, gardener will make a profit of over 40%.

In the process of building a 250-hectare seedless lime material area in Phung Hiep District, OCOP Fruit Cooperative has promoted technology transfer for farmers to grow products meeting VietGAP and GlobalGAP standards. This is a motivation for people to replicate effective production models in the coming time.

Farmers, Agriculture, Countryside:

Due to the complicated development of the Covid-19 pandemic, the consumption and prices of agricultural products in Long An Province have been greatly affected. Main crops of the province are sold at very low prices compared to the same period last year.

According to the functional sector, in the first 9 months of 2021, the price of IR 50404 rice ranges from VND4,200 to 5,500/kilogram, down VND700 - 800/kilogram over the same period last year. The price of sticky rice is VND4,200 - 5,300/kilogram, down VND700 - 800/kilogram.

Meanwhile, other key crops of the province also face difficulties in consumption and low selling prices. Specifically, the price of seedless lemons is from VND2,000 to 14,000/kilogram, down VND8,000 - 9,000/kilogram over the same period last year. The price of white flesh dragon fruit is from VND2,000 to 10,000/kilogram, down VND5,000/kilogram compared to the same period last year; the price of red flesh dragon fruit is from VND3,000 to 25,000/kilogram, down VND5,000/kilogram.
